A revolutionary application aiD (artificial intelligence for the deaf) that changes the data in meeting the communication needs of the hearing impaired.
The new ambitious aiD application aims to address and meet the communication needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing people, as well as their social integration, leveraging the latest developments in Technology and Artificial Intelligence. In particular, speech-to-text / text-to-speech algorithms have reached high performance today, and they have excellent cutting-edge progress to show. However, commercially available systems cannot be easily integrated into a solution aimed at communication between the deaf and the hearing. On the other hand, existing research efforts to address the problem of transcribing video semantics into written text or creating an avatar that will generate semantics from the text have failed to produce a satisfactory result.
This new application aims to create a holistic solution, where speech and text can be automatically converted into Sign Language through Avatars and vice versa from Sign Language to text.
The program is a synergy of many companies and organizations, including HandsUp, under the supervision and guidance of the Cyprus University of Technology. It is funded by the Horizon 2020 program.
Hands Up’s contribution in particular concerns the creation of appropriate sign language content for training the algorithm in natural facial movements and expressions. At the same time, the people of the company employed in the program have the opportunity to learn all the technological developments, earlier than they even come out in a product or application.
